Get Delicious, Healthy Vegetarian Diet Recipes with the MyFoodMyHealth Vegetarian Meal Plan and Diet

A vegetarian, plant-based diet can be a good alternative for many people. As long as you eat a variety of foods, a vegetarian diet can provide the nutritional ingredients you need to stay healthy. In fact, some research shows that individuals who follow a vegetarian diet are less likely to develop health conditions such as heart disease, colorectal cancer, type 2 diabetes and obesity.

The key to a healthy vegetarian diet is planning. You need to make wise food choices to ensure you get enough protein, iron, zinc, B12 and other vital nutrients.

General Information About a Vegetarian Diet

What types of vegetarian diets are there?

A vegetarian diet focuses on plants for food. These include fruits, vegetables, dried beans and peas, grains, seeds and nuts. There are three typical variations to the vegetarian diet. The types of vegetarian diet are:

  • Lacto-ovo vegetarian diet: A lacto-ovo vegetarian diet excludes meat, fish and poultry and foods containing these. It allows eggs and dairy. (MyFoodMyHealth follows this type of vegetarian diet program.)
  • Lacto-vegetarian diet: A lacto-vegetarian diet excludes meat, fish, poultry and eggs and foods that contain them. However, dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt are allowed in a lacto-vegetarian diet.
  • Vegan: A vegan diet excludes meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy and any foods that contain these products.

What should you consider when following a vegetarian diet?

Meat, fish and poultry are high in certain important nutrients, for example protein, zinc, iron and omega-3 fatty acids. When following a vegetarian diet, you need to ensure you are getting these and other nutrients from alternate sources. Vegetarians who do not eat dairy may also need alternate sources for calcium and vitamin D. Vegans may need alternate sources of vitamin B12.
