Looking for whole, natural and local ingredients? Now is the perfect time to head to your local farmers market. It's a great way to get fresh produce, fish, meat, dairy, baked goods and more.

Make it a Saturday or Sunday outing and pick up some seasonal, locally-grown fruits and vegetables or other delectable natural foods. Chances are you'll find local varietals you can't find at the supermarket. It's a great way to support your local economy, reduce environmental impact and get to know your local growers, fishers and ranchers.

Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables Pack a Powerful Punch

With summer growing season now in swing, it's a great time to enjoy more fruits and vegetables. Eating a rainbow of seasonal fruits and vegetables makes meal time more inspiring. It's also important to your health, since different fruits and vegetables provide different amounts of vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients that many help protect you against chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke and cancer.

Which fruits and vegetables are the best sources of nutrients?
When you head off to the farmers market or grocery store, how do you know which fruits and vegetables pack more nutritional punch? Follow these guidelines from the Center for Disease Control (CDC):
Good sources: foods containing 10 to 19 percent of the Daily Value per reference amount.
Excellent sources: foods containing 20 percent or more of the Daily Value per reference amount.

Some of our favorite fruits and vegetables to try this season: arugula, beets, blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, cucumbers, green onions, lettuce, peas, radishes and strawberries. They're full of nutrients and fresh summer flavors that are sure to please.
